Artist Statement
"Jan Jewell’s sense of design is insightful and bold; fitting to each unique application. Through her career, she has worked as a goldsmith, entrepreneur, graphic designer, home designer, and painter. Jan is based in Edmonds and this is her first opportunity to participate in the Open Studio Tour. She paints in a representational style using oil on canvas; and loves to be inspired by painting en plein air around the world. She has been a long time member of Plein Air Washington Artists (PAWA) and was president of the organization for two years. At home in the studio, she interprets her plein air studies into larger more formal studio paintings. As a painter, her desire to communicate the emotion she feels toward each subject has made this endeavor the one she finds most challenging and fulfilling.
Jan’s original education and career was as a goldsmith, working with individual clients to conceptualize a personal jewelry design that truthfully communicates the significance behind each piece, often using her client’s own gold and gemstones to re-set into a timeless heirloom. Jan earned a degree in Fine Art with a specialization in metalsmithing from the University of Houston, and apprenticed with a goldsmith Ellen Broker in Copenhagen, Denmark."
