Artist Statement
"Mike O’Day, a humorous illustrator, stumbled upon a clay studio in 2004 and immediately decided to transform his 2D sketches into 3D sculptures. After gradually discovering how to prevent his sculptures from cracking or exploding in the kiln, his career as a sculptor began. Mike has been a part of the brilliant committee that plans the tour every year, and this will be his eighteenth year participating. His biggest influences are Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) and Theodor Geisel (a.k.a. Doctor Seuss), two masters of creating imaginative creatures. Mike hand-builds his clay creations by building them solid, cutting them in half, hollowing them out and reattaching the pieces. He also uses slabs and coils. Presently, his garden art, murals and assorted quirky creatures are seen throughout the area and in galleries from Spokane to Seattle. Along with Julie Perrine, he is part of the ceramic studio at Graphite Arts Center and is a regular member of the Edmonds Art Studio Tour."
