Artist Statement
"Julie is a ceramic artist working out of her clay studio, Grit & Grog, located within the vibrant creative community of Graphite Arts Center. Most days, she can be found there shaping, carving, and refining hand-built functional and sculptural pottery that reflects both craftsmanship and joy. Her work celebrates the beauty of everyday rituals. Julie’s functional serving dishes have food-safe glazes and are dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe, each piece is thoughtfully designed to bring art into daily life.
She creates an abundance of flower vases inspired by the seasonal blooms of the Pacific Northwest, these elegant vessels showcase the region’s stunning flowers found at the summer markets. Alongside her functional ware, she produces small sculptural works that are whimsical, expressive, and full of personality.
Teaching is central to Julie’s artistic practice. She draws continual inspiration from her role as a guest instructor in several local schools and from leading small, intimate adult classes in her studio. Through teaching, she fosters creativity and connection, encouraging others to explore the tactile and transformative nature of clay."
